What about the sub did you think was so cool? What made the sub so special?

The sub's shape was very important...why do you think it was made that way?

The sub was made like that so it wouldn't take as long as the trieste expidition to get to the bottom.

3/30/2012 03:12:01 am
I found out how they did it. I did not write this.
Scientists measure the oceans' depths with special instruments called echo sounders. An echo sounder is mounted on a ship. Sound waves are sent to the ocean bottom, and the echo sounder measures the time it takes for the echo of the sound waves to return to the surface. These soundings are made continuously and are recorded on a moving strip of paper that shows the varying depths of the ocean beneath the ship. So far as anyone knows, the deepest spot is in the Pacific Ocean, near the Mariana Islands.

Awesome information! Could we have used a procedure like this on our ocean models the other day to get a better ocean profile of the bottom?
Nick P.
3/30/2012 03:21:42 am
We could I bet, but it would probably be a different procedure. Because you are going from water to air, you will probaly have to use different materials. But my guess is absolutly you can do that on land.
Sam J.
3/30/2012 03:16:43 am
It is based on temp., salinity, and pressure. Sound moves about 1.5 kilometers per second (4 times faster than through air).

Because it is easier to go vertical because it can go threw the water easier than if you went down horizontal.
