Big Miracle - Whales caught in Sea Ice
This is an email I received from a NOAA Scientist on Feb.2, 2012:
Good Afternoon Scuttlebutt,
This Friday, February 3, Universal Pictures will premiere Big Miracle, a new
movie inspired by “Operation Breakthrough,” the real-life rescue of three gray
whales trapped by sea ice off the coast of Barrow, Alaska, in 1988. Dave
Withrow, a NOAA Fisheries marine mammal biologist, participated throughout the
two-week rescue. Learn more about NOAA's role in the rescue, and see some
of Dave's pictures from the event, by visiting http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/stories/2012/02/2_1_2012_bigmiracle.html
We also have links to our large whale disentanglement program, to show how
NOAA and its trained partners actually conduct whale disentanglements. Our
rescuers do not enter the water with the whales, that is too dangerous for the
animal and the rescuer.
Best Regards,
Jonathan Shannon
